THANGASSERY LIGHT HOUSE AND FORT / KOLLAM DISTRICT / KERALA


Kollam which was formerly known as Quilon was a port city along the coast of Arabian Sea. Kollam proudly boast of its importance in history as it was the most wealthy and flourished sea ports among the Kerala coast of Arabian sea. It gained commercial reputation from the days of Romans and Phoenicians followed by Chinese , Portuguese , Dutch and English. The port at Kollam was mentioned by Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta who visited India. Still this part of Kollam has anglo indian population living with their own culture and preserving the history they carry among them .

Thangassery light house was build during 1902 and is 144 feet height . It can be viewed as far as 13 miles from the sea.

The view of arabian sea from the top of light house is breathtaking .


THANGASSERY FORT OR ST THOMAS FORT


Thangassery got its name from the gold trade happened in this area thanga = gold , ssery = place and hence the name . after chinese , portuguese came to quilon and they constructed the fort. later dutch seized the fort from them and made quilon the capital of dutch malabar and from them the region came into the hands of british. Now only a dilapidated structure of fort facing the arabian sea is only left behind and is now under the custody of archaeological survey of India.
